The P3O® guidance - aligned to the project, programme & risk management best practice - PRINCE2® Project management , MSP® Programme Management, and M_o_R® Risk Management - brings together in one place a set of principles, processes and techniques to facilitate effective portfolio, programme and project management through enablement, challenge and support structures.
The purpose of the Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices (P3O®) guidance is to provide universally applicable guidance that will enable individuals and organisations to successfully establish, develop and maintain appropriate business support structures that will allow:
- Informed senior management decision making on strategic alignment, prioritisation, risk management, optimisation of resource etc to successfully deliver their business objectives (portfolio management)
- Identification and realisation of business outcomes and benefits via programmes
- Successful delivery of project outputs that enable benefits within time, cost and quality restraints.
There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach – the model to be deployed in an organisation will depend on many things. For example:
· The business needs
· The size of the resource pool
· The vision and goals of both the organization and the P3O sponsor
A P3O model provides a decision enabling/delivery support structure for all change within an organisation.
P3O is a Best-Management-Practice certification. Our P3O training and P3O training courses are not just aimed at large, well-established organisations. Here at SPOCE, we offer both P3O Foundation and P3O Practitioner training courses, both of which are available using SPOCE’s public course programme, or to organisations wishing to run an in-house P3O training course for a group of delegates.
The P3O Foundation training course is a 3 day course that concludes with the P3O Foundation exam; a closed-book, 1 hour, multiple-choice style exam.
The P3O Practitioner training course is a 5-day course which includes the P3O Foundation exam on the afternoon of day 3 and concludes with the P3O Practitioner exam on the morning of the final day. The P3O Practitioner exam is a two and a half hour open book (P3O manual only) exam.
In summary, P3O training and P3O training courses are available to anyone who has need for an understanding of portfolio, programme and project management principles. If you are considering implementing or re-energising a P3O in your organisation, then the support of SPOCE can really help.
