MSP® : how it works

MSP® offers best practice guidance to help all organisations – public and private sector, large and small – achieve successful outcomes from their programme management time and time again.

All programmes exist in their own unique context that makes it impossible to implement quick-fix solutions. However, it is possible to create a framework for programme implementation and management provided it is based on the right principles.

MSP is built on three such principles. It is:

  • Universal in that it holds valid for every Programme
  • Self-validating in that it has been proven in practice
  • Empowering because it offers practitioners the power to influence and shape transformational change towards success.

Using the approach can bring numerous far-reaching benefits. It can help organisations:

  • Plan programmes effectively so they deliver on time and on budget
  • Keep a clear focus on outcomes
  • Respond to ongoing changes inside and outside the organisation
  • Define responsibilities and lines of communication
  • Provide a framework for engaging and involving stakeholders
  • Analyse and manage risks effectively
  • Audit and manage quality.

 Types of programme

MSP starts from the viewpoint that in order to achieve the desired outcomes, a systematic approach is needed – initially by defining the various types of programme organisation are likely to run.

For example, some programmes will clearly derive from a single source, such as senior management, but will have profound cross-functional implications for the whole organisation that require managing.

At other times, the need for management will become pressing when various existing organisational initiatives start to overlap and conflict.

Other programmes can be defines as “must-do” – in response to legislative change, for example, or even something more pervasive such as climate change.

Finally, multiple programmes can be created without the means of managing the organisational conflicts that arise out of them. MSP has been designed to help in all these situations and others like them by enabling management to focus both on outcomes and anticipate issues that might arise along the way.
