OVERVIEW

The UK Government PRINCE2® method is internationally accepted as the leading ‘best practice’ project management approach in both the public and private sectors.

This one day event provides an introduction to the PRINCE2® method focusing on its key elements and provides an understanding of how it can be successfully used to manage any type of project, regardless of scope or size.

 

DESIGNED FOR

Any organisation or individual seeing the need for, or tasked to introduce, a controlled approach to managing its projects.

The event is suitable for project managers, project support, team members and managers from any discipline.  Senior managers will also benefit from understanding how decision-support information is created and passed to appropriate managers.

The PRINCE2® method is flexible and adaptable for any type and size of project, and offers an excellent project management foundation for any member of staff; no prior experience is necessary.

 

OBJECTIVES

The key objectives of this Overview event are to:

  • Provide Delegates with an overall understanding of the benefits and principles that can be found in a structured approach to project management.
  • Provide Delegates with an appreciation of the principles of PRINCE2® within a work environment.
  • Enable communication with project management colleagues responsible for using PRINCE2® as the means of planning and controlling projects.
  • Enable Delegates to contribute to planning projects and management stages by having a basic understanding of the principles of structured project management and PRINCE2® in particular.
  • Enable Delegates to understand that PRINCE2® is really “structured common-sense” and that the introduction of the Method will add value to existing procedures.

 

EVENT CONTENT

This is an APM Group accredited event and includes the following topics.

Introduction To The PRINCE2® Method

An introductory session to set the scene.  The PRINCE2 ® Principles, Processes, and Themes will be identified and briefly explained.  WhatPRINCE2 ® is, and is not, will be discussed.  The benefits of introducing and tailoring PRINCE2 ® will also be covered.

PRINCE2® Principles

The method is based on seven principles established from experience of both good and bad projects. Each of these principles, which form the basis of all PRINCE2 ® projects, are explained and their contribution to successful projects discussed.

 

The Process-Based Approach

PRINCE2® is a process based method. A summary of the PRINCE2® processes will be reviewed and SPOCE’s PRINCE2 Process Model will be used to help delegates understand how the processes are used to manage any project.   

 

Themes

Delegates will be invited to select topics of interest for further detailed briefing fro the PRINCE2

The PRINCE2® themes describe and provide guidance on the common aspects of project management used throughout the processes. Themes include: The Business Case, Quality, Plans, Risk, Change, Progress and Organisation.

Implementation – The Project Environment

Successful projects will rely on the appropriate use of PRINCE2®. The options that are available for tailoring and implementation of PRINCE2 – and how SPOCE Project Management can help achieve a successful conclusion .

 

APPROACH

The event will be delivered by an approved PRINCE2® Trainer with practical experience of using the PRINCE2® method over a wide range of projects.

The normal style of delivery will be traditional with the Event Manager taking the attendees through each element and illustrating key points with visuals.  Questions and discussion will be encouraged throughout the event. This can also be supplemented by optional practical tasks that explore essential elements of successful projects. 

 A summary of how each Process operates and the linkages that exist between the major Processes will be presented using a summary Process Model.  This model is unique to SPOCE Project Management and is a powerful way of demonstrating how the Method works.  The briefing will be delivered in a style appropriate to the level of attendees and will be fully responsive to attendees’ needs. 

 

EVENT DETAILS

The Introduction & Overview event will normally last for one day.  But where required, the event can be adapted to meet the needs of customers.  About two hours would normally be the minimum time required to deliver a useful introduction to the PRINCE2 Method.

A course Handout for reference during and after the event is also provided.
